We have officially arrived in Mexico and I can honestly say I was not prepared. Between the long flights and lack of sleep, getting here was more stressful than relaxing. For the first time last night, I slept fully and comfortably and I am actually starting to feel relaxed and content with this trip. I have already met so many wonderful people who welcomed me and immediately made me feel safe. I am in Monterrey until this coming Sunday when I will fly to Guadalajara for another experience.
Let’s see, so far:
- I really do speak Spanish! Finding that out was truly a blessing.
- The water is drinkable and mi familia in Monterrey is incredibly proud of their water purification system in the city.
- I have some massive bug bites that are a little concerning.
- It’s hot. Really, really hot.
- I have already eaten tacos twice y son ricos! Also, Hardee’s exists here but it’s called Carl’s Jr. It is exactly the same as home.
- I’m having a really hard time switching between Spanish and English when I talk with my host brother or friends from home — my brain wasn’t ready!
- I went to a two hour bible study last night, talk about an experience.
- I exchanged the cash I brought with me for pesos and adjusting to this system is freaking me out a bit because it feels like I’m spending $54 on lunch but really it’s barely $5.
- I need to start taking more pictures soon! So far all I have is the view from my window at one of the family’s houses, as shown below.
- Today, we need to go buy plane tickets to get to Guadalajara and I am going to write postcards home hopefully!
- Also, 4G doesn’t exist here. The cell provider is TELCEL and they are making my life a little complicated haha.
- I learned a new word today: Fresa. It literally means strawberry but it also means in slang kind of, princess, or someone who has nice things I think. I am fresa aqui 🙁
With love from Mexico,
