In one of the final days of my adventures in Maine, we experienced some of the more touristy aspects of the area. My family and I traveled together to downtown (well, what they consider the big “downtown”) of Bucksport to visit Fort Knox and the new bridge and observatory on Penobscot. It was beautiful to go up in the elevator (only a 50 second ride to go up 447 feet!) to look out as far as you can see over the towns of Bucksport and Orland, Maine. When the door to the elevator opened, I was immediately greeted by this breathtaking view and gazed out over the beautiful stretch of space.
Following this, I broke away on my own to explore the tunnels and bunkers of Fort Knox. It was quite scary actually wandering the corridors alone sans flashlight and I could totally see how they host ghost tours in this space. It was quite peaceful to explore this on my own and feel like you’re taken back in time to when this fort was used for defense purposes. From atop the fort, you could look out again over the city of Bucksport and the beautiful weather gave me a perfect backdrop of blue and sparse clouds. What a truly peaceful experience.
With love from Fort Knox,
