Today, I opened my wallet. It was empty.
Been here before? Okay, so my wallet wasn’t literally empty. While I didn’t have any cash on hand, I still had my debit card which has minimal funds from working weekly. But if we’re being honest, I’m a pretty broke college kid. (Pretty broke, not necessarily pretty and broke) And this tends to make life difficult. But what can a girl do when there are so many tempting things that cost money?
A few things recently that have tempted my wallet…
Tailgating
I’ve mentioned it before, but it is truer than ever now. Tailgating in the SEC is officially a sport. I’ve already purchased two new UK appropriate outfits as well as a few red (yuck!) dresses to wear when I support Western Kentucky University at my boyfriend’s homecoming game next month. It absolutely amazes me how dressed up girls and guys alike continue to be at these games even in the blistering 90 degree heat. I love seeing all the cute dresses and effort put into looking amazing but we do have to remind ourselves…it’s only a football game. A game where guys hit each other as hard as they can while gaining mud and grass stains. And we consider this a dressy occasion. Oh, the South…
Sorority
Since I came to college, I have wrestled with the decision about joining the Greek community at the University of Kentucky. While I could definitely see myself enjoying the affiliation and activities associated with being in a sorority, I can’t feasibly permit myself to spend so much money on a social event! From friends and alumni, I have been told that a girl joining a quality sorority at the University of Kentucky can expect to spend nearly $3,000 a year. The idea would certainly be right for me if I attended a school where I didn’t have any friends or acquaintances prior to arriving here but that is not the case. I still haven’t made a final decision about whether I’d like to participate or not, but we shall see as Spring Rush is just right around the corner…
Travel
If you’ve read any other posts on this blog, you can see that I’m minorly obsessed with travel. Now that I have a passport and am close to bilingual, I feel almost entitled to go anywhere I get the chance. At the moment, I am planning an official Study Abroad trip with my university for next summer. Right now, the choices are between Spain and Costa Rica. Spain obviously is amazing and there are tons of programs heading there but Europe may actually break the bank. Costa Rica, while expensive, is going to include an intense bilingualism course taught by one of my favorite professors from the university. It is so incredibly tempting and I am going to have a very important decision to make in the near future — I’ll keep you posted!
With love from my late night thoughts,
