When I awoke this morning to snow on the ground, I knew I was extremely fortunate for the beautiful weather Kentucky experienced this past weekend. On Saturday, I attended the second to last University of Kentucky home football game for the season. Even though we were inevitably crushed by Mizzou, the day was beautiful and full of wonderful surprises. At a comfortable 65 degrees with some light wind but an overall beautifully sunny afternoon, the Cats played a noon game, which most fans tend to dread since tailgating is the real sport fans come out for. Because it was so early in the day, the student turnout for tailgating and the game was ultimately disappointing. As a general rule, basketball season has already started and the allegiance in the Big Blue Nation stands with basketball over football. Nevertheless, I had a lovely day cheering on my Cats. I spent the day with my boyfriend’s parents and even got to participate in the coin toss at the start of the game. Feeling the energy on the field was phenomenal — even though University of Kentucky fans maintain somewhat low expectations for the performance of our football team, hearing the cheers and encouragement from fans throughout Commonwealth Stadium as I stood on the sidelines undoubtedly created a moment I will remember forever.
