For my readers who have been following me for quite some time, many of you know that I have long been on the fence about getting involved with my school’s Greek community. Guess what? I finally took the plunge! Last week, I accepted a bid to become the newest member of Kappa Delta at the University of Kentucky! It’s been a long time coming, to say the least, but I am really happy that I went through with it. I actually didn’t tell anyone I was going through recruitment this spring until it was almost over! I really wanted to go into this process with an open mind and know that I’m doing it for me, and no one else. I think I found a great fit at Kappa Delta and I’m proud to say I have 9 other pledge sisters who are embarking on this adventure with me this spring! We haven’t done much yet, but I know these next six weeks of pledging are going to go by so quickly. My pledge class is already so close! I love getting to know these girls so well and that our class is so small. Our first date party (Mardi Gras themed!) and New Member retreat are this weekend and I couldn’t be more excited to get to know many of my new sisters.
I have and continue to find myself at odds with the Greek system, on occasion, for the sheer fact that it is a very expensive endeavor and some of the traditions and practices conflict with my studies as a GWS major. I’m really excited to become an insider of this community and to move past the stereotypes that surround the Greek community. Kappa Delta has been nothing but welcoming to me thus far and I cannot wait to narrate my journey here!
Below are some pictures of my bid night, first degree ceremony, and quotes from a few of my new pledge sisters about what joining Kappa Delta means to them!
With love from the library,
Sarah Alexandra
“Joining a sorority was always something I considered doing. I attended a small private school throughout my elementary, middle, and high school days, and I graduated with 58 people. I knew coming to the University of Kentucky was going to be a big step in my life, with many more people. I wanted to make my college experience as fun and as comforting as possible, so I thought joining a sorority would make a huge community a little bit smaller. My mom, as well as my grandmother, were both Kappa Delta’s, and that makes me a double legacy. I had no other option than to follow in their footsteps, and I was more than happy to! I can’t wait to see what my future as a KD lady has in store for me!” – Preslee
“On February 18th I officially received my bid to Kappa Delta at the University of Kentucky and could not be anymore excited! For a while now, I have wanted to join a sorority because who doesn’t want a bunch of new sisters and friends. To me friendship is very important and this was one of the things I was looking forward to most in a sorority. At the first event at Kappa Delta, I instantly felt welcomed and connected with these girls and knew I had found my home away from home. Everyone was super kind and genuine and this made me feel loved. I hope to gain many new friends and opportunities by joining a sorority. I love community service and can’t wait to give back to the community through different philanthropy events. Also, I can’t wait to get super close with my pledge class and with the other girls in the chapter! Kappa Delta sisterhood doesn’t end after college it is forever. And besides all of the wonderful opportunities and experiences, who doesn’t love cute crafts and a lot of new clothes!” – Carolyn
