I genuinely thought coming into this fall season that I was done with maxi skirts. In my opinion, most maxi skirts I’ve had in the past had to be worn with tighter fitting tops and only during certain occasions. I’ve come to realize that when paired with the right accessories, maxi skirts are no longer solely day time beach apparel, but rather an outfit choice that styles very appropriately for casual days or even office wear. I have a handful of cheap maxi skirts I snagged at Target last season for around $15 a piece. I’m very particular about the fabric of maxi skirts — while I want something breathable and comfortable, it’s crucial to purchase a skirt that is thick enough to wear underwear with and not have them show; same rule applies to being able to tuck in a skirt to a maxi skirt.
This top, although it might be on its last leg after several summers of wear, ended up being the identical color of the bright teal stripe in the this Target maxi that also by chance matched a J Crew statement necklace (you know how I love those!) from eBay that I purchased by mistake. I love bidding on eBay items, but I almost never win. That week, of course, I won 3 necklaces — I guess life could be worse! Anyways, I find maxi skirts are dressed up by wedges and the height (especially on someone shorter and curvier like me) keeps the maxi skirt from swallowing my legs, and lets me keep a decent shape and silhouette. This look is definitely modest and comfortable for sitting in my office chair hours on end. I can slip on a navy (or bright coral!) cardigan with this to change the look up and provide a little more work for a chilly office or cooler fall days. The navy in the skirt and accessories darkens the outfit just enough so it transitions well into fall. I originally purchased this top as a bathing suit cover up and it shrank in the wash — never stop repurposing clothing and stop putting away something you think might only be appropriate in the summer. Long skirts, tanks, light sweaters, and fun accessories are appropriate year-round!
